We recently sat down with owner of Restore and Remedial Massage Therapist, Selena Hagan, to ask her a few things you may not know about her, and what it’s like being a massage therapist in Hobart.
Q: How long have you been a massage therapist for, and where did you study?
A: I have been working as a massage therapist in Hobart for nearly 16 years! I studied a Certificate of Massage here in Hobart with The Australian College of Massage (now called Evolve), and completed a Diploma of Health in Clinical Massage in Launceston in 2001.
Q: What do you like about being a massage therapist?
A: I LOVE the human body and all it’s amazing strengths and weaknesses. My favourite subject while studying Sport Science at University in Launceston was Anatomy, learning all about what makes us move and function. I love applying all this knowledge, along with my years of experience working in the sport and fitness industries, to working with clients and their needs and helping them to cope with every day stresses and pain. Plus the bonus of the smiles and thanks I receive after their treatment. I truly do love my job!
Q: If you weren’t a massage therapist, what would you be?
A: Probably a Physiotherapist, or a Personal Trainer, or a Fitness Coach, or an Exercise Physiologist. I couldn’t sit at a desk. It’s just not in my nature.
Q: What is your favourite food?
Anything hot and spicy!
Q: What do you do in your spare time?
A: What spare time? I am currently completing (seems to be taking me forever!) a Pilates Mat qualification, as well as developing some research into Cupping and burns scars. Add to that a young family and running a business, I don’t get a lot of spare time. When I do, I love to spend time with my little family at the family shack on the Tasman Peninsula, reading novels, drinking wine and enjoying coffee at Cubed Espresso. I am also Publicity Officer for the Kingborough Little Athletics Centre, where I spent many of my younger days. My life has turned full circle as my two children now compete for the club, and I am doing my dues now as a parent, paying back all the years my mum and grandfather put in.
Q: What are your favourite childhood memories?
A: Camping with my parents and older brother on the Tasman Peninsula, going fishing with my Dad, many many years doing Little Athletics and the wonderful lifelong friendships I made, and always having my parents there to encourage me in whatever I wanted to do in life.
Q: What was the craziest job you’ve ever had?
A: I wouldn’t say it was crazy, but straight out of University at the ripe age of 21 I travelled to the USA by myself and worked as a Camp Counsellor for CCUSA on a private camp in the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. It was a fantastic experience, if a little daunting as my first solo overseas trip.
Q: Do you prefer dogs or cats?
Definitely dogs! We don’t have one currently, but we are looking at getting one down the track……if it behaves around our pet rabbit!
Q: To finish with, can you tell us something random people may not know about you?
A: I can wriggle my ears independently!
